The Stuff of Your Life

The stuff of your life
Spread across the open highway
Bits of today and yesterday
Stuff left behind
With or without a thought
Stuff from loved ones
Stuff from nowhere
Memories and mysteries
Of all shapes and sizes
The Stuff of Your Life

That
You really wanted to hang on to
But just didn't
For one reason or another
Perhaps a catastrophe
Mechanical Breakdown
Mental?
More likely something more subtle
A brief distraction
A momentary lapse of consciousness
Just a slight slip and

Whoops!
There goes some more stuff
Showing up now and then
Across the road
And across your memory
As little plastic Jesus statuettes
Mushrooming malignantly
Small monuments to mistakes
Poor stuff!
The Stuff of Your Life

At least you still have
Your other stuff
The same stuff but different
Different shapes and sizes
Different memories and mysteries
This stuff is good stuff
Some of it has been really loyal
Having remained your stuff
Long after the utility
And even the memories have faded
All this stuff is your stuff
Painstakingly quilted by you
Into a four dimentional
Still life tapestry
Of a depiction
Of your version
Of your life
The Stuff of Your Life

You need more stuff
You need a better job
With more pay
So you can go out and buy more stuff
...to replace the lost stuff
And the damaged stuff
And the old stuff
And the lame stuff
And just to add to your collection
Of Late Twentieth Century Prosperity Icons
Ah, The Stuff of Your Life

It's just stuff after all
